Hake Longline Fishery Conservation (2017)

25 February 2015

CapMarine continues to work with the South African Hake Longline Association (SAHLLA) and WWF deploying observers on hake longline vessels. The objectives are to obtain information on various aspects of the fishery to help identify areas of the fishery that need improvement. The project uses the broad MSC principles as the basis for identifying aspects of the fishery that need improvement. The project is managed by Victor Ngcongo in our office who is working closely with SAHLLA. Through this program longline hake have been moved to the SASSI green listing and other species caught as a bycatch in the fishery such as kingklip are under review.
