My name is Sarah Jane Wilkinson and I'm from Cape Town. I joined CapMarine in 2003 as a Coordinator for the Offshore Resources Obsevrver Programme (OROP) shortly after completing an Honours Degree in biological sciences from UCT. Since joining I have amassed much experience in working with fisheries data and I have specialized in the mapping and analysis of fisheries catch and effort across all commercial sectors in southern Africa. This information is used directly in impact assessments of offshore activities including hydrocarbon exploration (seismic surveys) and infrastructure developments including the installation of subsea pipelines, wellheads and telecommunication systems. I have also provided spatial planning input to the offshore marine protected areas project initiative by the South African National Biodiversity Institute. When not involved in fisheries consulting, I co-ordinate and manage the placement of specialist marine mammal observers on board seismic survey vessels. In accordance with the environmental requirements for these surveys, our observers undertake dedicated visual and acoustic monitoring of marine fauna and are required to take action, under certain conditions, to mitigate any potential harm to marine life, whales, dolphins and turtles in particular. I am currently one of the directors of CapMarine and am responsible for the guidance and leadership of the company in all new endeavors. One of the most rewarding aspects of this job is the variety of projects that I encounter and the interaction with all aspects of a lively and dynamic industry.
